Virtual Medicine or Telemedicine Q & A

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is the practice of medicine that uses technology to deliver care from a distance. Click2MD physicians use telecommunications infrastructure, such as a video call, phone call, or email, to deliver care when you’re at a distant site, such as your home, work or out of town.

Using telecommunications equipment (audio-video equipment like microphones and cameras over the internet), your physician can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medications. All the care could be provided remotely, and you do not need to be in the doctor’s office.

Telemedicine also refers to the use of digital communication and information technologies to manage your health care remotely, such as accessing your electronic records or uploading a food log, scheduling appointments, or viewing your prescriptions, medications, or lab results.

With telemedicine, you can also receive email, text, or phone reminders for an appointment or when you’re due for an upcoming test or screening.

How does a telemedicine appointment work?

A telemedicine appointment is similar to your normal appointment. You sit in front of your camera where you can see both yourself and your physician on the screen once your session begins. These appointments are called virtual visits. Your camera could be a telephone, tablet or computer. Your physician asks you questions while you are in front of your camera. You will see both your and physician’s images. Skin or other parts of the body could be visually examined if needed.

Your physician will discuss with you his impression (diagnosis), recommend his treatment plan, and prescribe medications electronically. Indicated labs and x-rays can also be ordered electronically if indicated.

All communications are confidential and compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).

Your physician or the friendly staff can give you helpful instructions on how to prepare for and set up your telemedicine appointment.

What are the benefits of telemedicine?

Telemedicine offers many benefits. It is a cost-effective and practical alternative to the more traditional face-to-face in-office visits.

Other benefits of telemedicine include:

  • Making healthcare accessible to people who live in isolated or rural communities
  • Saving time, money, and inconvenience
  • Avoids unnecessary visits to ER or urgent care by screening illnesses ahead of time
  • Better monitoring of chronic illnesses
  • Making services more convenient or readily available for those with limited mobility, transportation options, or time
  • Having a healthcare provider is available on short notice

If an illness is identified during your visit that requires emergency or urgent intervention, your physician will advise you to seek appropriate immediate medical care, such as going to the emergency room or urgent care. Your physician also explains the reason to do so.
